Early Years and Reception

The beginning of a Learning Journey…

The Early Years education (ages 2-4) and Reception (ages 4-5) offered at Leigh House follows an international topic based curriculum that focuses on the development of the whole child using a multi-sensory approach. Our children learn through hands-on, exploration and play. Our highly qualified teachers ensure that all our children reach developmental milestones through a fun and interactive approach to learning. Group and individual activities are blended to provide a balance of skills and experience for each child.

Our approach is to foster a love of learning, problem-solving, experimentation and inquisitiveness to provide a solid foundation for the child’s future. The emphasis is on learning through play in an environment planned to stimulate discovery, independence, and social interaction. Children are encouraged to help themselves, take initiative and become increasingly independent in order to develop self-esteem and social competence. It is important that children develop a sense of trust and are comfortable in their environment.

The curriculum used at Leigh House is based on the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and has seven learning areas:

The prime areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional

The specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Lower School – Years 1 and 2

Setting Foundations for Excellence…

Our priority lies in preparing our pupils to be confident readers, spellers, writers, and users of number skills thereby laying the foundation for academic excellence in Upper School.

The core curriculum subjects are based on the British National Curriculum with a blend of the Nigerian National Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science, and ICT. Other subjects taught are: Handwriting, Information Communication Technology (I.C.T.), History, Geography, French, Religious Education, Citizenship, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education (P.E) and a Nigerian Language.

With small classes and personalized programs, our pupils are carefully supported on their quest to meet our high expectations.
